Emily
7 years old | Diagnosis: Convergence insufficiency, Accommodative infacility, Ocular motor dysfunction | Graduated from a vision therapy program in 38 weeks
Emily had been complaining of headaches and seeing double. Getting her to do homework was impossible! I kept trying to vary the times we would work on her homework but no matter what time of day she would cry and tell me she was so tired and her head hurt. I would describe homework sessions as very emotional. After she started eye therapy, I started noticing an improvement as early as 3 months. Now that she is finishing eye therapy, homework time is 100% better. She reads books constantly without being told to. She gets her homework done without complaining or crying. She rarely complains about headaches and if she does it is not when reading or doing homework. Thank goodness we found this program, it has made a world of difference!

A.J.
8 years old | Diagnosis: General binocular vision dysfunction, Visual processing delay | Graduated from a vision therapy program in 36 weeks
A year ago, the school wanted to put A.J. in special ed. He couldn't read, his behavior was atrocious. At home his nightly homework could take over an hour. We fought for every minute of it. He was behind in every subject.
A year later he's a different kid. No calls from school, no meetings to discuss “what to do with A.J.” He as almost completely caught up to his classmates in reading. In some subjects he surpasses the class average. Homework is completed cheerfully, by himself, in 20 or 30 minutes. It's been a remarkable turnaround.
And, as A.J. pointed out, his carsickness is gone along with headaches he used to suffer from.

Jessica
18 years old | Diagnosis: General binocular vision dysfunction, Convergence insufficiency | Graduated from a vision therapy program in 20 weeks
Being in college is enough of a challenge without having to worry about my eyes. I took V.T. mostly over the summer between my senior year in High School and freshman year in college. I don't think I would be doing as well in college if it wasn't for vision therapy. I love to read now and what I do read I comprehend. I also can finish whatever I'm reading in less than half the time it took me before V.T. I used to not really care about school (not that I did bad) and when I had to read, I'd try anyway to get out of it. Now I probably read on average an hour and a half every day (when I have the time). I love to read even if it is just for the pleasure of reading. However, I know that if it wasn't for my mother, Dr. Metzger, and especially Jean, I wouldn't have been able to do it. I probably wouldn't have made it though some of my classes without it. And to be honest, the first time I sat down (after my V.T. was done) and read a 200 page book in about 2 hours I cried. All because I didn't think I'd ever be the person to say “I'll be there in a minute. Let me finish reading.” And, I love saying that!! I know that may sound crazy coming from a college student but vision therapy changed my life. My eyes are my life because ¾ of my work and college homework is reading! I would definitely suggest it to anyone who has trouble like I had!
Thanks you Dr. Metzger and Jean for not giving up on me! I can't say that enough.
Thanks a bunch,
Jessica
Jason
14 years old | Diagnosis: Convergence insufficiency | Graduated from a vision therapy program in 19 weeks
I always had difficulty with school and didn't like to read very much. It was difficult for me to pay attention in school and want to do any homework. I started wearing glasses in the fourth grade, but they didn't seem to help very much. Last year in school I started struggling and my grades dropped. We went back to the local eye doctor and he diagnosed me with convergence insufficiency. His form of treatment was to put me in a series of prism glasses and read for half an hour each day. I already hated to read!! So, I knew it was not going to be a successful and my mom did some research with the friends and local schools and discovered vision therapy in Lenexa , KS .
We visited Dr. Metzger and instantly knew this was the place for us to come for help. We drove every week, more than 1 ½ hours each way, to get help for me. Believe me, I didn't like getting up that early to be there before school, but I had to so that I didn't miss too much.
I can now focus my eyes much better, which has allowed me to have a longer attention span at school and doing homework. I know you are thinking that doing all of the home therapy can be boring, but my mom and older sister and I had competitions all of the time to make it fun. We even did Harry's blocks in the car when my dad was driving us places, just to get therapy done! It just takes time, but it is all worth it. I hope that all of my effort helps me not only in my studies, but with my sports as well. I could already tell that I am batting much better and that I can pass with more confidence in basketball.
Vision Therapy is the way to go in getting your eyes focused on the same thing. I loved working with everyone at Vision Therapy and would recommend it for anyone who has doubts. It is very effective and I will never forget this valuable time in my life.
Harrison
7 years old | Diagnosis: Ocular motor dysfunction of pursuits, Previous surgery for strabismus | Graduated from a vision therapy program in 36 weeks
Dear Jean, Kiran, Dr. Metzger and Caroline,
I feel like shouting “thank you” at the top of my lungs! You truly have changed Harrison 's life. Even though vision therapy wasn't the entire answer or us, it was a major piece of the puzzle! Harrison has gone from not reading at all and claiming “the letters were moving” to reading ahead of grade level. His balance, core strength, and ability to aim and hit a target have sky rocketed! Thanks for giving me the tools to work with him at home. I loved being a part of his transformation! All of you will hold a special place in my heart!
With gratitude,
Anna (Harrison 's mom) |
