Vision Therapy — Our Process
Vision therapy is a step-by-step-by-step process. Some patients will have two in-office exams to determine whether or not vision therapy should be recommended. Please review our What To Expect brochure.
- The first exam covers general eye health and several
oculomotor tests. IF there are visual issues beyond 20/20 eyesight that cannot be corrected with lenses alone, a second evaluation to evaluate in-depth binocular vision skills and visual perceptual/visual processing skills may be recommended.
- The second exam lasts about two hours and covers
visual motor integration,
visual memory, visualization, reversal frequency and more oculomotor testing. We are able to treat all areas we test.
- Once all testing is complete, the results will be collected and put into a report written by Dr. Metzger. A separate consultation is scheduled to review the results with the doctor and parents on a separate date. It is strongly recommended that BOTH parents or relevant caregiver involved with the patient attend the report consultation.
- When a program of vision therapy is recommended, it may last from 25 to 36 weeks, depending on each individual patient's needs. Progess testing is done at intervals throughout each program of care.
Vision therapy takes place in our office once a week for 60 minutes. The patient will perform activities one-on-one with an experienced vision therapist for the first 45 to 50 minutes.
The remaining portion of the hour is spent having a parent or helper meet with the therapist to review activities that will be sent home. We request each patient complete 15 to 20 minutes of homework at least four times between weekly therapy session. The homework is critical to the progress of therapy.
