Vision Therapy : Treating Strabismus (Crossed Eye) and Amblyopia (Lazy Eye)

Strabismus and amblyopia are visual conditions that affect the visual system, which is composed of the eyes, brain and the connections between the two. Vision therapy is an effective and lasting non-surgical treatment for both conditions, depending on the severity of the case. Through vision therapy, the eyes and brain can be retrained to gain greater coordination and control and taught to work together as a team. Patients from the age of toddlers to adults can gain successful results from in-office vision therapy.

In the past, treatment recommendations have included constant patching for both conditions, and surgery specifically for strabismus, to "strengthen" or "straighten" the affected eye. This often leaves patients with eye teaming, tracking focusing and focusing problems. Surgery may cosmetically straighten the eye, but if the brain is not also "retrained" to use the eyes together, problems will persist and surgery may be recommended for a second or third time with often the same results.

Also, a comprehensive plan of care to treat a crossed or lazy eye includes much more than just constant patching, which can have a significant negative effect on a child's self-esteem.
